Dear 30 Year Old Hannah,

As the guarded Scorpio you are, this has proven to be one of the most difficult things you’ve ever written. It has taken you months to figure out what you want to say and finding the courage to allow yourself to be vulnerable and allow your friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers to learn about the secrets and dreams you hold so close to you. Although difficult, writing this letter has helped you see the value in fear and its ultimate conquering.

It is strange to think how fast life has gone by, it seems like just yesterday you were putting on shows with your brother in the living room; rolling the biggest snowball ever during your last snow day in Missouri before your move to Texas; and spending your weekends in a dusty, old theater or thrift store with your friends. I hope the years between 30 and now are filled with similar, happy memories. You’re off to a great start with the times you have spent in dark basements listening to your friends’ bands and simply sitting in a circle in your attic late at night.

The only thing I want for you is to be truly happy. You have worked so hard your entire life to overcome your lonely and turbulent childhood. You have spent so much time trying to look for the light and focusing on that rather than the wrong that has been done to you and the pain you’ve had to endure. You have always been strong and I know that no matter what will happen, you will live and thrive. You are a survivor and always will be.

Along with true happiness, I hope you find the security in relationships you strife and long for. I hope you have found lasting security with the people who mean the most to you. Your friendships have alway mattered so much to you and I hope that hasn’t changed. You deserve to have friends who bring out the best in you and support you through everything. Especially when you need someone to talk to as venting and talking it out has helped you feel better about whatever you’re going through. You have lucky to have found some in college and I hope these friendships last beyond the receiving of your diploma.

I hope you continue to grow as a person and never lose sight of the goals you have made for yourself. You are capable of achieving your dreams and I hope at 30 you are on your way towards them.

Finally, I hope someone has finally written a happy song about you.
