FIFA has been getting a lot of bad press this year because of a 47-count indictment released from the U.S. Department of Justice this past summer. The department also indicted 14 officials for corruption and racketeering. These counts are serious marks against the soccer organization, and have caused many fans from around the world to step back and reassess what they know about FIFA. While the organization has left a lot for fans to consider, they have recently given fans a moment to cheer for.
The new EA sports FIFA 16 video game, launching September 22nd, will feature women’s national soccer teams (Guys, this is historic, groundbreaking news). You should totally check out the video below:
These fierce Ladies are right, the time IS now! The awesome women involved in the project understand why it’s so important for women to be represented in video games. In an interview with EA Sports, gold medalist Alex Morgan said, “I was once that little girl and I know how important it was to me to have role models for me to emulate on and off the field.”
Many games have included women in one way or another, often in pretty harmful ways, but this FIFA game features women prominently and positively, giving us hope for what lies ahead. The characters in this game are all real athletes. There are no damsels in distress here, these women do not need rescuing by anyone except maybe one of their teammates when caught in a particularly tricky game situation.
In the game, these women will be wearing standard, athletic uniforms. They will not be over-sexualized in appearance or animation. These women are being included in a legitimate and respectful way. They are being celebrated for their athletic prowess.
In the game, the soccer players will be viewed as athletes rather than simply women. Now girls all over the world can play the Ladies they aspire to be while playing the video games they love. Young athletes of any gender from across the world will be able to see these women standing right alongside their male soccer idols – women playing sports is becoming more normalized and that’s a beautiful thing!
The FIFA video game series has been in production since the 1980’s, translated into 18 languages and is available in at least 51 countries. It has sold well over 100 million copies worldwide. It also holds the title as the fastest selling sports game ever. I think it’s safe to say that it’s about time the game featured some of our world’s wonderful female athletes.
FIFA 16 will feature 12 teams including Germany, USA, France, Sweden, England, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Spain, China, Italy, and Mexico.
We’ll finally get to see these amazing women athletes on our gaming devices, and I can’t wait.
